Job Description

Hamilton City Council is seeking a motivated and skilled Gardener – Street Landscapes to join its Parks and Recreation team within the Customer & Community Group. This full-time role is ideal for someone passionate about horticulture, public spaces, and contributing to a vibrant, well-maintained city environment.

You will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing Hamilton’s street landscapes, supporting gardening activities across the city, and working collaboratively with a dedicated team committed to community wellbeing.

Responsibilities

As a Gardener – Street Landscapes, your key duties will include:

  • Daily maintenance of street and roadside landscapes
  • Supporting gardening and planting activities across the city
  • Assisting the wider Parks and Recreation team when required
  • Preparing, maintaining, and enhancing established gardens and landscaped areas
  • Identifying and controlling plant pests and diseases
  • Preparing and applying agrichemicals in a safe and compliant manner
  • Setting up and working within traffic management requirements
  • Using and maintaining gardening tools, plant, and equipment
  • Ensuring all work complies with Health and Safety standards
  • Supporting trainees and apprentices through positive role modelling

Requirements

Education & Qualifications

  • Minimum New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Services (Level 3) – Amenity, or similar
  • Grow Safe qualification (advantageous)
  • Traffic Controller/STMS qualification and experience with traffic management setups (advantageous)

Experience & Skills

  • Experience in amenity horticulture and street landscaping
  • Knowledge of amenity plants, pests, and diseases
  • Experience with general tools, plant, and equipment
  • Experience preparing and applying agrichemicals
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements
  • Physically fit and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Licences

  • Current Full New Zealand Driver Licence (required)
